Renner Honored By Coaches
Claude M. Renner, teacher at Morgantown School, received a 30-year pin
from the Indiana Coaches' Association last night at the Butler Union Building.
The pin was awarded to Mr. Renner for his service to athletics during that
period. He began coaching with a girls' basketball team about 1930. He then moved
up to a junior high boys' team and worked his way to the varsity at Morgantown.
He coached varsity basketball from 1942 to 1947. He stepped down to the
reserve team after that year, then held that position until 1961.
Mr. Renner was born in Morgan County May 16, 1905 and attended grade school
at Aliff School in Jackson Township. He attended Morgantown High School and graduated
from Franklin College in 1923.
He began his teaching career at Clay Township in September 1923, where he
taught for four years. He left there to take a teaching job with the fifth and
sixth grades at Morgantown. He also had one year's experience at the Lake School
on 252.
After that he returned to Morgantown where he has taught until now.
Always a backer of athletics and a real fan, Mr. Renner has missed only
four high school basketball games in 30 years at Morgantown. He has served most
of them as a coach or a score-keeper.

Claude Renner honored at Morgantown "reunion"
(Editor's Note: The following article was written especially for The Daily
Journal by Merrill (Beezer) Johnson, who was one of several "old grads"
who returned to Morgantown High School Saturday night for a reunion and to honor
the school's veteran educator coach, Claude Renner.) By Merrill (Beezer)
Johnson
MORGANTOWN Saturday night the Morgantown High School (now consolidated
with Indian Creek) Alumni Association held its annual meeting. The theme for
this year's meeting was "The Little Red Schoolhouse" and featured a
history of educational facilities in Jackson Township by Claude Renner.
All of the preparations were planned around the admiration for a favorite
teacher and coach. Mr. Renner was asked to speak on the "History of the
School" but unknown to him it was "Claude Renner Night." They
came back from all over to pay tribute. They came from all parts of Indiana,
from Florida and one couple from Samoa. Those who were students of Renner's,
those who taught with him, some of the principals he taught under, and many friends
and well wishers.
It was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the class of 1944 and also of the
basketball team which had brought Morgantown its first tourney championship.
Mr. Renner was the coach of that team. Tom Satter, captain of the '44 team, presented
Mr. Renner with a large plaque proclaiming him the Coach of the Year for 1943-44
In the Tri County Conference.
Mr. Ezra Satter, president of the Nineveh - Hensley - Jackson School Corp.,
then read a resolution passed by the school board at Its last meeting. This was
to name the gymnasium at Morgan- (continued on back page, col. 3.) Renner (continued
from front page) town the Claude Renner Gymnasium.
Mr. Wendell Campbell, vice, president of the Alumni Association then presented
Mr. Renner with a plaque for his many years as a dedicated teacher and educator.
Mr. Horton, principal of the Morgantown Elementary School then presented
Claude with a lifetime pass to all functions in the gym.
Renner graduated from MHS in 1923 and traveled to Franklin on the old Big
4 train to attend Franklin College in 1923, 24 and 25. He then attended Central
Normal College at Danville in 1927 and 1928. The son of a blacksmith in Mahalasvllle,
Indiana, he was short of funds but long on determination. He finally received
his degree from I.U. In 1960.
Renner has been teaching for 46 years. Forty two years at Morgantown and
Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson (where he is still teaching) and the first 4 years at
the old Clay Township school (1923. 27). He has taught under 11 dlfferent principals
of which Mr. John Hynds (1961-65), Mr. Roger Adklns (65-67), Mr. Charles Ray
(1967 to present) and Mr. Horton were in attendance.
Renner loves to talk about all his boys and girls. Those whom he remembers
humorous stories about and those who have gone on to be successful. And the
boys and girls love to talk about the old days with "Renner." One former
student presented him with a box of chalk to recall the days when he would throw
chalk at wayward boys in class. It was a night that Claude Renner will remember
for many years and all who were there and those who weren't will remember Claude
Renner forever.
A plaque was also presented to Mr. Irwin Whitaker, a 1919 graduate back
for his fiftieth anniversary by the businessmen of Morgantown for fifty years
of continuous business operations in the community.
Mrs. Wilma Holman received a gift for being the oldest alumna present and
Mr. Judson Whitaker for traveling the farthest to attend.

MORGANTOWN Mr. Claude M. Renner, teacher at Morgantown School will

To the editor:
Sometimes there comes into our lives a personality which has a profound
influence upon our course of life. Such a man was Roy A. Davee, who I am proud
to say was my teacher in the old Aliff School in Jackson Township for three years.
I have in my possession a book which he presented to me with the following
inscription: "May you always be as faithful in your daily walks of life
as you have been during this school year 1913."
I believe it was his influence which caused me to choose teaching as a career
in which I am finishing 48 years.
I can still see Roy, as we all called him, coming to school, carrying his
Bible from which he read to us (this was before Bible reading was taboo in schools).
Things were a little different 50 years ago.
I am sure those of us who are left of that group will agree that his influence
was great and good and we all learned lessons at his feet that will never be
forgotten. It was my pleasure to have some of Roy's sons and daughters in my
own classes. He has gone to a just reward and to meet some of his old pupils,
Tom, Hughie, Merritt, Gene and dozens of others, mayhaps to have school up there.
He is gone but I am sure his memory will live on as long as some of us remain.

Claude M. Renner Closes 48-Year Teaching and Coaching Career
Claude M. Renner is retiring this year after 48 years as a teacher.
He began teaching in 1923, after graduating from Morgantown High School
and attending Franklin College, at the Plunkett School on Observatory Road in
Clay Township.
After a stay of four years, in, the fall of 1927 he went to Morgantown where
he remained until the school was consolidated with the Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson
School Corporation. While at Morgantown, Renner taught every grade except the
first and second. He also served as varsity basketball coach from 1942 to 1947,
having five successful seasons.
He is proud of his attendance record, having taught 37 years without a sick
day. Ten years ago, due to a hernia operation, he was absent 18 days, but since
that time has missed no days due to illness.
After the consolidation he was moved to Indian Creek High School where he
taught earth science and general math in the high school as well as science and
math in the junior high at Trafalgar. He also served as audio visual director
for the corporation.
He and his wife Mary (nee Smith) are avid sport fans. Renner served as official
scorer and timer for many years, attending every varsity basketball game except
two since Indian Creek started its sports program. He estimates that he and Mary
probably had seen 1,000 basketball games, plus football and baseball contests.
They were awarded an Indian Creek blanket plus a life-time pass for all athletic
events at Indian Creek in recognition of his services.
He and his wife are the parents of three children M. Frank (Bud)
Renner, commissioner of administration for the state of Indiana, and Patricia
Sink and Claudia Cline, who are employed by the Indiana National Guard at Stout
Field.
They live in Mahalasville on R. R. 3, Martinsville, having spent their entire
married life of 40 years at this address.
When asked how he expected to spend his time, he said, "As I do not
wish to lose complete contact with school and the kids, I expect to do some substitute
teaching, also to do some of the things which I wished to do, but never had time
for."
His interviewer commented: "It is not without some degree of loss that
he leaves, knowing full well he will miss the friends and associates with whom
he has worked these many years, but when Father Time says it's time to quit,
there is no alternative but to do so. After all, 48 years is enough, don't you
think?"
